For those interested in esoteric links to churches, you may enjoy this read.

Some interesting things can be found at St John, Maddermarket in the city of Norwich in England.

Located in the church is the Layer Quaternity dating from the 1600s.

In addition to this, the church yard shows early associations between the church and the Freemasons of the city:

Thank you for the info, very interesting.
Theres a blog here: http://aquariumofvulcan.blogspot.co.uk/p/the-layer-monument.html that goes into more detail about the Layer Monument and co-incidently, the next article in the blog is about the Philosopher's Stone, shown in your first link.

It is surprising how little it is realised that these momento mori are not lamenting the state of physical death, but rather the state of spiritual death in life and commemorate the dead person's struggle against it.

Thanks for the post Aedis,
As RM says, it's an interesting example of "momento mori". I'm surprised Lovuian hasn't commented on the symbolism below the skull yet.

Nic

Interesting! If I am in this part of England I will visit. I hear Norwich has a very nice gothic cathedral.
