As regards the two souls: you can pick from four - Charlot, Anne, Roseline and Marie-Madeleine.

a glance at an Atlas shows that they are to the west of both the Paris and the Greenwich meridians ?

The filming of La Beauté sur la terre takes place east of the meridian, he tells you where it was shot....but you have to be a very good researcher to pinpoint the exact spot where the scenes are filmed. Took me 10 mins.

Roseline's route leaves Rodez goes south west & then strangely veers off eastwards ...there is a reason.

Everything east of the meridian is in the past or running backwards.

Anne's perignations in Paris come and go over the Meridian.

And even more telling, when we're in the Canaries and using the méridien de l'île de Fer, the story goes East and West of that line too....forwards and backwards in time!

I might be completely and utterly wrong about all this of course ....but I don't think so.

The film La Beaute sur la Terre was shot to the east of Rodez. It was shot at the time of the Roseline crash in 1967. The film was released in 1968 and probably shot the year before that so how do you work out that time was running backwards?
Sheila mentions that Anne criss-crosses the Paris meridian. The only two locations mentioned for Anne in Paris are Valerian Aries’ flat and Le Square de la Trinité both of which are to the west of the Paris meridian
In the Canary islands the El Hierro meridian is located in the extreme west of the islands and neither Anne nor Charlot cross it. They travel to Gran Canaria which is to the east of the el Hierro meridian, travel to Lanzarote which is even further east and back again to Gran Canaria.
The time and place shifts on the Canary Islands seem to be triggered by other things such as too much booze or even magic mushrooms.
Regarding other candidates for the two souls in the Circuit story. Nobody else seems to fit the bill as the other characters apart from the villains just serve to provide information.

As for the car there a couple of other peculiar ones such as the one belonging to Valerien Aries and the green on in Chapter XX used as a murder weapon.

La Beauté didn't use a double in the film, she played the scene herself.

You've captured the brooding presence rather well.

Sure has dried up compared to a hundred years ago. Reckon the water is slowly draining through the rock?

Wonder how long ago it formed. And what might lay in the bottom of it.

cette butte qui domine le lac de Barrenc avait été dans un passé pas si lointain que ça, un espace où il faisait bon venir le week-end pour se reposer dans un endroit calme en bordure de ce petit lac plein de fraîcheur.

This butte that dominates the lac de Barrenc was, in the not too distant past, a place where it was good to come for the week-end to rest and chill-out in calm surroundings on the banks of the small fresh lake.

Good question C.G.

Even today there are still large ruins in the middle of the woods that surround the lac de barrenc, you'll see the ruins of a farm; a métairie where you could get really good milk.
At the end of the 1800's this métairie served as a very popular open-air bar, a buvette for the curists who came up here to bath in the lake. Apparently they used to fish for trout there because the waters had once been a lot higher than today.

The locals will confirm that the butte that dominates the lac de barrenc was, in the not too distant past, a place where it was good to come for the week-end to chill-out in calm surroundings on the banks of the fresh lake.
Today it's hard to envision what must have been a lovely site, full of bathers, visitors and fishermen because the area is overgrown to such an extent by the trees and all that's left is an apparently stagnant water-hole.

In the up-to-date view aérienne you can see the ruined walls of the métairie that became the buvette, 30 meters or so east of the lac.

The ruined building stands on parcel N° 133 c LA FÔRET.

The inhabitants of the village of les Bains needed to undertake some work to let out the overflowing water of lac Barrenc. But nobody really knew how to go about doing it correctly.
One day when they were all anxiously discussing the situation, the "bélier" (the drac) erupted from the middle of the lake, and approaching them said...." Do not continue the work that you have started, because if you do, Les Bains will be submerged and Montferrand will very soon follow suit and disappear". Impressed more by the devil than his prophecies, the local inhabitants abandoned the project forever.

Mr Balkan captures the mood of the place very well.

Image

It's a karst "lake", a sinkhole with an aquifer system fed by an underground water source into a depression with no surface inlet or outlet, the same source (on the northern side) feeds the river stream of La Dous. There was a "fontaine" visible in the old days.

That mountain is riddled with collapsing cavern areas as the soluble rock breaks down.

...and again ! apologize for the horrible youtube compression. There are parts filmed with GoPro that get distorted because of the vegetation/foliage that is not rendered properly.

Sorry I've been very busy these days. Probably next week I'll be back on the terrain for photoimpressions.
