I believe the below article was translated into Spanish, but I haven't seen it in English.
This was the same year as Gelis was assaulted.
It was also a time of anti-clericalism in France.

Quote:

A rough English translation (I apologies in advance to the Francophone members of the forum):

Quote:
Priests continue to believe that the law is not made for them.
Despite the law prohibiting external manifestations of worship, the priest of Rennes-le-Chateau (Aude) has not wanted to follow this order, with the procession of St. Mark.
When the constable in charge of the execution of the order was present to re-direct the procession back into the church, the priest told him he could calm down/shut up, and continued the procession.
Minutes were drawn up immediately and sent to the prosecutor in Limoux.

Has some background on the politics of the period.
